Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

The hub of energy research at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is at the NYSTAR-funded Center for Future Energy Systems (CFES), where world-leading science and engineering researchers from different fields work to advance energy technologies.  First designated in 2004 by NYSTAR as the “Energy CAT”, the mission of CFES is to pair the talent and resources of a world-leading research university with industry innovators to move new technologies from the lab to the marketplace. The CFES vision is a future energy system that is sustainable, resilient, and economical, enabled by renewable energy, cost-effective energy storage, efficient energy utilization, and a more resilient power grid.

Since its inception in 2004, CFES has established itself as a leader in nurturing New York's energy industry. CFES proudly offers access to world-class expertise in areas that range from basic materials for energy storage and energy conversion, to power electronics and renewable energy, and to power system monitoring, modeling and control. Research activities at CFES are organized around three broad themes:
  • Distributed Energy Resources
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Distributed System Platforms (Smart Grids)

CFES collaborates with industry, government and educational organizations to advance fundamental or applied research in these areas. Industry partners can engage CFES in a number of ways:

  • Collaborate with expert faculty through sponsored research
  • Access Center facilities and laboratories through a facility use agreement
  • Receive assistance in applying for federal or state funding for your research
  • Technology transfer opportunities and licensing
  • Assistance with developing business plans
  • Technical consultation assistance
CFES also offers research partners access to world-class research facilities and laboratories in support of energy research. CFES operates two core laboratories: the Distributed Energy Resources System Integration Lab (DERSIL) and the Energy Materials and Devices Lab (EMDL). Industry partners can access these labs through joint research or by signing a facility use agreement. RPI has a broad range of capabilities and expertise representing a tremendous resource for New York State companies.
