Course Overview:

Inverters are a key technology for enabling a clean energy future. As increasing amounts of renewable energy, distributed energy resources (DERs) and energy storage are added to the grid, more sophisticated or “smart” inverter technologies will be needed. This 3-part webinar course, featuring expert speakers from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), will provide an introduction to advanced inverters, including their capability to manage fluctuating variable sources of energy, provide services to the grid and increase hosting capacity of the distribution system to facilitate increased penetration of renewable energy.

Class 1

Introduction to Advanced Inverters

Instructor: Andy Hoke, Senior Engineer, National Renewable Energy Laboratory

This course will cover the following topics:

·         What are advanced inverters?

·         Operating modes and benefits of advanced inverters

·         Examples of field and lab applications of advanced inverters

·         Standards for advanced inverters (IEEE 1547, UL 1741, etc)

·         Application of advanced inverter functionality to energy storage inverters

Class 2

Performing Grid Services with Advanced Inverters

Instructor: Adarsh Nagarajan, Group Research Manager, National Renewable Energy Laboratory

This course will cover the following topics:

·         Details of possible grid services from DERs with advanced inverters

·         Use-cases depicting operation DERs with advanced inverters and their benefits

·         Challenges of choosing the right grid services and advanced inverter settings in real-world applications

·         PRECISETM for identifying the right advanced inverter settings for real-world use

·         Functional description of PRECISETM tool

Class 3

Increasing Hosting Capacity with Advanced Inverters

Instructor: Kelsey Horowitz, Lead Researcher: Sustainable Technology Analysis, National Renewable Energy Laboratory

This course will cover the following topics:

·         Time-series analysis methods for analyzing the potential of advanced inverters to expand the hosting capacity

·         Hosting capacity expansions that can be achieved with different types of advanced inverter controls, examining solutions for integration of a few large, utility or developer-owned resources versus behind-the-meter customer-owned resources

·         Comparison of using advanced inverters to expand the hosting capacity versus traditional utility infrastructure upgrades

·         Potential interactions between PV, energy storage, and dynamic loads and their effects on hosting capacity with different controls

·         Implications of using advanced inverter functions on the economics of distributed energy resources
